Château La Louvière in Pessac-Léognan

Estivales Pessac-Léognan are back this week-end 17th/18th June 2023

During the last Open Days in the Pessac-Léognan Appellation (« les Estivales », 11 & 12th June 2022) I was able to revisit this magnificent property. Being a student I did the harvest in Carbonnieux and my friend in La Louvière. Feeling a bit nostalgic remembering that time…

With a friend we had chosen to visit this Château on the one hand for the quality of its wines and the sumptuousness of the place and on the other hand for the activities proposed, in particular the artisanal manufacture and heating of barrels by master coopers of the « Tonnellerie Bordelaise » (Jean-Mathieu and Romain explained us a lot)

We had the chance to take this guided tour with the Cellar Master, which made the experience particularly informative.

I let you appreciate the property through my photo report… All you have to do is book your wine tourism stay in Bordeaux!

The Cellar

It is really a beautiful barrel cellar, with a few amphoras as well.

The wines

Château La Louvière white wine: Château La Louvière has long been famous for its white wines.  In fact, these already highly-prized by Canadian merchants in the 17th century ! A century later, they were to be found on the finest tables in Saint Petersburg. The very elegant white La Louvière is now among the finest dry white wines in the Graves, and is a fine ambassador for the Pessac-Léognan appellation. Marked by the Sauvignon Blanc varietal character, but not overly so, it can age remarkably well.

My favorite wine! Mandatory purchase (12,90€ for 2018, 13,60€ normal price with no dicount for the Open Doors) To drink 2022-2026

Château La Louvière’s second white wine, L de La Louvière is made with the same care and attention as its older brother. This wine is immensely attractive thanks to its roundness and fruitiness. It is produced according to traditional methods with a few modern touches in a prestigious location where art reigns alongside winegrowing. Fresh and fruity, 100% Sauvignon blanc. Consumption period: 2022-2026

Château La Louvière Red: Château La Louvière has many fascinating facets. The sumptuous architecture of the château building dates from the late 18th century, but winegrowing here goes back more than 700 years. The first vines were planted circa 1310, although modern winemaking dates from the 17th century and was handed down by able monks from the Carthusian monastery in Bordeaux, who had acquired considerable talent as viticulturists and winemakers. The people who produce the wine in the 21st century have inherited these time-honoured methods, adding just the right amount of innovation and modernity to make the utmost of the outstanding terroir. La Louvière’s red wine has a dark colour and an elegant bouquet with delicate hints of oak…

Full and complex wine – Consumption period for 2016: 2022-2040

2016 is one of the great vintages of the last 20 years: it was marked by an exceptionally mild and humid winter, heavily watered spring until June. Then, in mid-June, the vintage changed radically in profile: daytime heat and dryness, cool nights. Ideal conditions for beautiful grapes! Merlot 60% / Cabernet Sauvignon 40 % Paired with: white meats, cheese, red meats, game.

A great idea Gift box, white & red
