Wine tourism: Château Chasse-Spleen in Moulis en Médoc, near Bordeaux

Located in Médoc (Moulis-en-Médoc), less than an hour from Bordeaux center, this magnificent Château (winery) welcomes you.

The vineyard on the left, an artwork (yes !) on the right. These oversized boots were made by Lilian Bourgeat, a French artist who sees everything in big ! Called « Invendus » (not sold) the boots are 3 metres high and are actually 2 left feet. You can find the same masterpiece in the Château du Rivau (37120 Lémeré, near Tour/Saumur, great wines too !)

Pheromone capsules in the vines to sow sexual confusion, thus allowing devastating butterflies to be lured (an alternative to pesticides)

The vat room

The barrel cellar, with great colors, the red from the barrel and the red on the ceiling which is the work of the Swiss artist Felice Varini, born in Locarno. He uses the anamophosis technique which is a distorted projection or perspective requiring the viewer to occupy a specific vantage point, use special devices or both to view a recognizable image. Some of the media are used in painting, photography, sculpture and installation, toys, and film special effects. Here in the barrel cellar if you stand exactly on the right corner you will then see the 6 big triangles formed by various smaller triangles painted everywhere. Isn’t it amazing ? Felice Varini applied this technique to other spots, such as the Cité de Carcassonne (temporary exhibition in 2018) or the Saint-Nazaire harbour.

2 hectares for the white wine : muscadet, sauvignon & sémillon grape varieties. It is unusual in Médoc to have white grape varieties but properties tend to offer a wider selection nowadays. These vines were planted in 1995 only, so 24 years average (against 35/40 for the red vines).

This Bordeaux Blanc 2014 I tasted (you can’t call it Médoc!) was very enjoyable. Price 24/25€ (more or less)

A wine bar is opened from May to October, 7 days a week (including bank holidays) between 12h-2.30pm. In July/August the bar also opens in the evening from 5 to 8pm (due to the Covid situation you will have to check this information)
