PRESENTATION This new monthly event invites you to discover an episode from the documentary series Des Vignes et des Hommes (Vines and People), co-produced by Grand Angle, La Fondation pour la Culture et les Civilisations du Vin and Arte France. This presentation and screening is followed by a tasting of two wines, led by the sommelier of La Cité du Vin. For over 1,000 years, many plots of vines have looked down onto the banks of the Rhine between Frankfurt and Koblenz. Needless to say, the 50-degree slope does not facilitate the task of the local winegrowers! Over 20,000 hectares of Riesling, the German grape variety by excellence, are grown here compared with 3,000 hectares in France. The reflection of the sun’s rays on the river is said to play a major role in the grape ripening process. Over the past few years, however, winegrowers in the Rhine Valley have noticed the growing damaging effects of climate change on their vineyards, threatening to jeopardise their production of Riesling. Winemakers are turning to recent scientific knowledge to protect the character of their white wines.
The documentary Germany, The Rhine Valley by Herlé JOUON (Grand Angle Productions, 26′, original version with French subtitles), explains how students and professors at the University of Geisenheim have developed an invention like no other, consisting of an open-air laboratory that simulates the effects of climate change over the next fifty years on an experimental vineyard planted with more than 29 grape varieties. The time really has come to adapt.
